Purchasing Fine Jewelry

Investing in fine jewelry is usually a good strategy and it allows the owner to wear these special pieces whenever there is an opportunity to enjoy them. However, when buying fine jewelry, there are some things that should be considered.

Fragile Stones
It is a good idea to save your most fragile jewelry for special occasions only. Some fragile stones like opal and peridot should only be worn for special events and then carefully stored until the next occasion. This may seem irritating since you want to be able to wear your best pieces, but it can prolong their life if you avoid exposing them to the elements too often.

Lab-Created Gemstones
When looking to invest in jewelry containing sapphires, opals or rubies, make sure that you understand what lab created means. Lab-created gemstones are grown in a laboratory using scientific means. Jewelry that you see labeled as lab created such as sapphire has never seen Mother Nature. If you are looking for natural gemstones, you may be paying a higher price and you may need to spend significant time looking for a vendor outside of your local mall.

Sterling Silver And Diamonds
If you see a ring that claims to be diamond and has a sterling silver setting, be very wary. Diamonds are only professionally set in white gold, yellow gold or platinum. Very rarely and mostly never will you see a diamond ring set in sterling silver. There are a few infrequent cases with a few low grade diamond chips set in silver, but usually this will not happen. If you see a jewelry store with this practice, they are usually selling zirconia and claiming them as diamonds.

An Experienced Jeweler
As with any important purchase, make sure that you are purchasing your jewelry from an experienced jeweler, one who has a solid reputation. You need one that you can trust and who can help you find what you need. They need to be friendly too, and not just another salesperson pushing what they think you should buy. It may even be wise to spend a little more in an established store, than to risk buying what seems to be the same item from someone spurious.

Buying A Diamond
When trying to shop for diamonds, make sure to take your time. Diamonds, unlike things like computers and cars, will not go bad on you. They should last a lifetime. Also, for the price ranges that these stones run, you should not buy them on impulse. Take your time and create the special piece for you or someone you care about.

Designer Jewelry
Designer jewelry can be pricey and not affordable to someone on a budget. Luckily, there are quality replicas available, and for a price almost anyone can afford. These replicas resemble the real jewelry but without the huge hit to the wallet. You can have the luxury of wearing it whenever you'd like, instead of just on special occasions. They are truly a fashionable, affordable alternative to designer name jewelry.
